Hearing loss questions to assess hearing loss

If you suspect mum or dad, or even your child may be sufferring from some form of hearing loss, these are good questions to start the process of checking their hearing with. Sometimes you can also test by observing rather than asking questions.

The following questions may help determine if you have some form of hearing loss:

  • Do you have difficulty hearing over the phone?
  • Can you hear better in one ear than the other when on the telephone?
  • Do people constantly say you have the television volume turned up too high?
  • Do you have difficulty following the conversation of two or more people who are talking at the same time?
  • Do you have to strain to understand conversation?
  • Do you have trouble hearing in a noisy background?
  • Do you have trouble hearing in restaurants?
  • Do you have dizziness, pain, or ringing in your ears?
  • Do you find yourself asking people to repeat themselves?
  • Do family members or co-workers remark about you missing what has been said?
  • Do many people you talk to seem to mumble (or not speak clearly)?
  • Do you misunderstand what others are saying and respond inappropriately?
  • Do others every get frustrated with your hearing ability?

If you have answered yes to more than 2 of these questions, you may have a hearing problem. Try our free online hearing test however it it recommended that if you have not had your hearing tested in the last 10 years and you are under 50 years old or in the last 3 years and you are over 50 years old, you should have your hearing tested by a certified audiologist. Ensuring that you catch hearing loss in the early stages and that proper action is taken is important.
